Goldfish Liberation Movement (2012-)

金魚に逆品種改良を施し、その祖先であるフナの姿へと戻すことを試みるプロジェクト。実際に5年以上をかけて交配実験を行っている。

金魚の祖先は野生のフナであり、1700 年間の品種改良を通じて多種多様な品種が生み出されてきた。鑑賞と愛玩を目的にデザインされた金魚たちは、その姿かたちから、自然環境下で生き抜く力を持たない。

本作は「金魚解放運動」の名のもとに、金魚を逆方向に品種改良し直して、祖先のフナのかたちへと戻すことで、人間の手から解放し、彼らの野性を回復することが目的とされている。

逆品種改良による解放という、矛盾する行為を通して、生命の操作にまつわる欲望や美意識、創意工夫、あるいは人間と他生物の相互依存や共進化について思考する。

This project attempts to reverse-breed goldfish back into the form of their ancestor, the crucian carp (funa). The artist has in fact been conducting breeding experiments over a period of more than five years.

The ancestor of the goldfish is the wild crucian carp, and through 1,700 years of selective breeding, an extraordinary variety of goldfish species has been created. Designed for viewing and companionship, goldfish have evolved into forms that can no longer survive independently in the natural environment.

Under the name of the “Goldfish Liberation Movement,” this work seeks to free goldfish from human control by reverse-engineering their breeding process and returning them to the form of their ancestral crucian carp, thereby restoring their wild nature.

Through the contradictory act of liberation by means of selective breeding, the work reflects on human desires surrounding the manipulation of life, as well as aesthetics, ingenuity, and the interdependence and co-evolution between humans and other living beings.
